TUSD Parent Access Night: On October 18th families from Roskruge were invited to the school for a short workshop on how to use TUSD’s Parent Access Program. Families were given their login numbers and walked through the sign up process. The TUSD Parent Access Program allows parents to log into an account, via the TUSD web page, and view their students’ grades, attendance and standardized test scores. This tool can also be used to communicate with teachers. GEAR UP encourages all the 8th grade families to use this great tool to get involved in their students education.

Marine Discovery: Roskruge students attended the Marine Discovery Trip on November 30th. Marine Discovery consisted of on campus, hands on workshops which included activity based laboratory programs which provided students with the opportunity to work with live marine animals and teaching specimens. Students were exposed to living and preserved organisms found in the Gulf of California and gained a general understanding of the scientific relationships between them.

The University of Arizona Homecoming: Roskruge students attended homecoming at The University of Arizona on November 3rd. GEAR UP students attended pre-game festivities on the mall at the University of Arizona, watched the homecoming parade, ate lunch in the Student Union, participated in Jr. Scientists Day at the Science Library and attended the homecoming football game VICTORY against UCLA.

Mars Song Writing Competition: The University of Arizona is the only public University to partner with NASA on the ambitious Mission to Mars project. Earlier this year all 3600 GEAR UP students were invited to participate in a song writing contest. The only requirement was that the song have something to do with The University of Arizona of the Mission to Mars. The contest ran from the mid August to mid September. Hundreds of songs were submitted and the winner from Roskruge was Nicholas Dominguez! Congratulations Nicholas.

CEDO (Rocky Point Trip): The winners of the GEAR UP Mission to Mars Song Writing Contest were invited to Rocky Point for a weekend full of Marine Biology. We stayed at CEDO, which is a research institute. We were guided each day (and night) by marine Biology experts from The University of Arizona. It was an unforgettable event for our students and families.

Monthly Presentations: This month’s college coach presentation is on Study Skills.

3 on 3 Basketball: Students from Sunnyside and the Tucson Unified School Districts will square off in this exciting basketball tournament, Spring 2008 at The University of Arizona campus. College coaches meet will hold regular practices with students and discuss the importance of academics and athletics. Students will learn fundamental basketball skills, watch footage from inspiring sports films such as Coach Carter, Hoop Dreams, Hoosiers, Glory Road; students will also learn valuable lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. We are currently looking for score keepers and volunteers.

High School Visitation Day: The Tucson GEAR UP Project will invite families to come to Tucson High Magnet School. The purpose of this visit will be to demystify the high school experience. We will be in classrooms with Tucson High teachers, we will see the campus and we will talk with students and families about what they need to do to get ready for high school. The visitation day will be in mid March, and the final date is coming soon. Please join us!
