Special Opportunities

Currently, we are looking for teachers who are interested in joining Orion's Quest, www.orionsquest.org for Fall and Spring 08. Orion's Quest is authentic "spaced-based" research in the classroom. The STEM research happens in real time, while a shuttle mission is occurring, and research is used by NASA affiliated scientists. Prior missions incorporated engineering, math, space science and biology with research on the organism C. elegans (a small worm). Next year's mission will involve more chemistry and physics (crystal structure of elements). If you are interested, please contact ude.anozira.liame@eertasil

The Tucson GEAR UP Project Math Science & Technology Symposia Series

The symposia series features scientists and other educators who are at the cutting edge of scientific research and technology applications. The Symposia are a partnership between The Tucson GEAR UP Project, the UA College of Science, and the UA Libraries. The symposia are free to all Tucson GEAR UP teachers.

Upcoming Workshops & Symposia in the Tucson GEAR UP Project Math Science & Technology Symposia Series

Currently, there are no upcoming symposia or workshops, but we are looking for teachers who are interested in joining Orion's Quest, www.orionsquest.org for Fall and Spring 08. Orion's Quest is authentic "spaced-based" research in the classroom. The STEM research happens in real time, while a shuttle mission is occurring, and research is used by NASA affiliated scientists. Previous Workshops and Symposia:

1st Web 2.0 Technology Workshop

The workshop was held at the UA Main Library from 9 AM to 12 PM on Saturday March 8th, and included a complimentary box lunch and a free Sansa Sandsik Mp3 player/recorder.

Speaker: Beth Malapanes
Teacher-Librarian/Canyon del Oro High School Educational Technology Trainer/Amphitheater SD. Beth shared innovative and simple ways to incorporate popular Web 2.0 tools such as blogging, podcasting, and wikis (e.g. weblogs, online video/audio, collaborative content sites) into your teaching. 40 Teachers who attended received a Free Sansa Sandisk Mp3 Player/Recorder, recertification credit, and met other teachers interested in technology and network with UA Librarians and College of Science / Tucson GEAR UP Project staff

Symposium 1 Reconciliation Ecology

Speakers:
Dr. Mike Rosenzweig, Professor and founder of the UA Dept of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, author of Win-Win Ecology and Director of the Alliance for Reconciliation Ecology. Dr. Rosenzweig spoke on reconciliation ecology (how humans can live with and support biodiversity) and the species-area relationship (how to deal with the idea that as area increases, the number of species present, the diversity, also increases). He also talked about how citizens can help to support biodiversity.
Josh Chesler, PhD Candidate, Mathematics
. Josh spoke about the conundrum presented by teaching a negative times a negative is a positive.

Symposium 2 Evolution and How to Teach it

Speaker: Dr. Joanna Masel, Professor in the University of Arizona Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Dr. Masel is a Mathematical Biologist. Evolution and the role of mathematics in its study, plus k12 teaching suggestions.

Learning Materials, Articles, Links
  • Understanding Evolution
Understanding Evolution is a website for teachers and learners widely recognized for its excellence. The site contains lessons for k-12 classrooms, background information, strategies for approaching the teaching of evolution, case studies and interactive modules. The site is authored by the Understanding Evolution team at the University of California Museum of Paleontology.
  • The Arthropod Story
An excellent interactive resource (Part of Understanding Evolution)
  • The Tree of Life Web Project on Evolution & Phylogeny
The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists from around the world. On more than 9000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history (phylogeny), and characteristics.
  • PBS Evolution Project
The evolution project contains courses for teachers, online lessons for students and a variety of interactive modules for learning about evolution. For example, All in the Family is a Macromedia Flash based interactive tutorial on how evolutionary relationships are determined that emphasizes the differences between looking at superficial morphological characteristics and shared ancestry.

Symposium 3 Global Climate Change

Speakers: Dr. Travis Huxman, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona, and Director of the UA Biosphere 2. Lecture: “Global climate change - the importance of carbon and water dynamics”.
Ben Polleta, PhD Student in Mathematics
at the University of Arizona on network theory.

  • Sonoran Desert Weedwackers- Fight Buffelgrass and Other Invasive Plants!
The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers (SDWW), an outgrowth of the Southern Chapter of the Arizona Native Plant Society, is a community network of volunteers that began in 2000 with the goal of eradicating non-native invasive grasses with the particular focus on buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) in Tucson Mountain Park. Meeting Times for Sonoran Desert Weedwackers in the Tucson Mountains
8 AM Jan.-March, 7 AM Sept-Dec. & April-May, 6 AM June-Aug. Learn more about Weedwacker efforts, see slideshows of their work. Note that in January 08 Cholla High School Students helped on a "pull" in the Tucson Mountains.
  • Tucson Bird Count, TBC. Participate in tracking birds in important bird areas all around Tucson. TBC is a cooperative project begun by members of Tucson's science, conservation, and birding communities. Each year, TBC volunteers (each on a morning of their choosing) collect data on the abundances and distributions of bird species from hundreds of sites in and around the Tucson area. In addition to being a lot of fun, the TBC emphasizes a scientifically rigorous survey design to ensure quality data for a number of uses.
