Program Overview

The federally funded GEAR UP program is a partnership with colleges and universities across the country. The Tucson GEAR UP Project is administered by The University of Arizona, with additional support from Pima Community College.

 

Setting a Pathway to College

GEAR UP makes college real for students who may believe higher education is out of reach. The Tucson GEAR UP Project is designed to:

Students

  • Encourage young people to set higher educational and career goals
  • Help students learn how to prepare, enter and succeed in college

Parents

  • Help parents support their child's education and college planning
  • Teach parents how to apply for scholarships and financial aid

Teachers

  • Provide teachers training in helping GEAR UP students improve their grades and prepare for college
  • Increase the number of students who graduate from high school

Activities

The Tucson GEAR UP Project offers a variety of free programs and services to students and families:

  • College Coaches at each school
  • College Knowledge Workshops
  • Career Exploration Opportunities
  • Tutoring & AIMS Preparation
  • Campus Visits & Tours
  • Summer Enrichment Activities
  • Math Through Mariachi Program
  • Voices of GEAR UP
  • Scholarships

Participating Schools

Students in the high school graduating class of 2012 who attend one of the 19 schools in the Sunnyside and Tucson Unified School Districts are served by the project.
